The Diverter is mounted downstream of the seamer on a single outfeed chain that must run at a speed that results in cans being spaced approximately 0.75 inches (20 mm). The opening in the production guide rails, where the cans are diverted, is normally closed off by a pneumatically controlled reject gate that opens only when cans are to be rejected. Two angular rejection shoes are used to divert the cans off the production line onto the takeaway chain. For single can sampling or the first sequence of multiple can sampling, the reject gate is opened and the small shoe is extended in front of the first can and deflects that can into the shaped guide rails on the takeaway conveyor. The takeaway conveyor chain must run approximately 10 percent faster than the production chain in order to prevent multiple rejected cans from backing up into the reject opening and jamming the production line. This device requires a minimum can velocity of 600 cans per minute so the cans will have sufficient momentum to divert cleanly into the reject area. When large sample lots are required, then the second wide shoe is extended to provide a completely closed reject path onto the takeaway chain. This allows a full round of the filler to be sampled with no jams.
