Is the use of Gamma sources in inspection equipment safe?

The use of Gamma sources in inspection equipment is safe.  We assure the safe deployment of our Gamma sources by design under NRC guidelines:

  • Gamma sources are wipe tested every three years. No abnormality has ever been detected in any of the wipe tests conducted on a filtec Gamma source machine in our 50+ years of business.
  • filtec’s Gamma sources meet international safety standards that are published and agreed to by regulatory authorities throughout the world.


What is the safety record of Gamma sources?

filtec Gamma sources are safe.  Our 100mCi Gamma sources have been certified for a minimum working life of 40 years of continuous use by AEA Technology.  Moreover, we are not aware of any failure of a filtec Gamma source.  

 

Can a sealed filtec Gamma source explode?

In the opinion of the independent laboratory that has performed the testing on the filtec Gamma sources, the 100mCi sources are safe for a minimum of 40 years. Periodic wipe testing is designed to detect abnormalities in the source.  No abnormality has ever been detected in any of the wipe tests conducted on a filtec Gamma source machine in our 50+ years of business. All tests have shown that there is absolutely no danger of a filtec source exploding.
