Is the use of Gamma sources in inspection equipment safe?

Yes, the use of Gamma sources in inspection equipment is safe. We ensure the safe deployment of our Gamma sources by design under NRC guidelines:

• Gamma sources are wipe tested every three years. No abnormality has ever been detected in any wipe tests conducted on a filtec Gamma source machine in our more than 50 years of business.

• filtec’s Gamma sources meet international safety standards that are published and
  agreed to by regulatory authorities throughout the world.
  

What is the safety record of Gamma sources?

Industrial Dynamics/filtec Gamma sources are safe. AEA Technology has certified our 100mCi Gamma sources for a minimum working life of 40 years of continuous use. There has never been a failure of a filtec Gamma source in our more than 50 years of business.

Can a sealed filtec Gamma source explode?

An independent laboratory that performed a safety assessment of the mechanical strength of the filtec Gamma source capsule stated “it is quite clear that the capsule is adequately strong to contain all the helium pressure which could ever be produced”. Periodic wipe testing is designed to detect abnormalities in the source. No abnormality has ever been detected in any of the wipe tests conducted on a filtec Gamma source machine in our more than 50 years in business. All tests have shown that there is absolutely no danger of a filtec source exploding.
